12-15 luglio - 13° RAND Summer Institute (Santa Monica)

RAND is pleased to announce the 13th annual RAND Summer Institute (RSI), which will take place in Santa Monica, CA, July 12-15, 2006. The RSI consists of two conferences addressing critical issues facing our aging population: a Mini-Medical School for Social Scientists (July 12-13) and a workshop on the Demography, Economics and Epidemiology of Aging (July 14-15).  The primary aim of the RSI is to expose scholars interested in the study of aging to a wide range of research being conducted in fields beyond their own specialties.

The Mini-Med School focuses on biomedical issues relating to aging and should be of interest to all non-medically trained scholars regardless of background.  Topics will be drawn from the diverse fields of biomedicine, including biology, genetics, patient care, psychiatry, and other areas. Expert clinicians and researchers will provide participants with insight into the science of aging and a greater understanding of relevant medical issues.

The Workshop on Aging is targeted to pre- and post-doctoral students and junior faculty, and to more senior researchers new to aging research.   It will consist of four half-day sessions with topics drawn from research areas in the social sciences, including discussions of savings, disability, and quality of life issues. In each session, leading experts will discuss the state of the literature, integrating results from their own research and supplementing these overviews with more detailed analyses of specific topics.

We invite all interested researchers to apply to attend the 2006 RSI. Applicants may apply for fellowship support to pay for registration, travel, and accommodations.  Both the Mini-Med School and the workshop are described more fully at our web site: http://www.rand.org/labor/aging/rsi/. For additional information, please contact Renae M. Dupuis (dupuis@rand.org).

RSI is sponsored by the National Institute on Aging and the Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research at the National Institutes of Health.

Call for Junior Demographer–Junior Demographer Travel Grant

The IUSSP Scientific Committee on Historical Demography invites applications for junior demographers to attend the IUSSP seminar on Longevity: Early-life Conditions, Social Mobility and Other Factors that Influence Survival to Old Age, organized by the Scientific Committee on Historical Demography. The seminar will be held in Lund, Sweden, on 8-10 June 2006, in collaboration with the Research Group in Economic Demography, Lund University. (Further details available at: http://www.iussp.org/Activities/scc-his2/hist%20early-lifeannounce.pdf)
The Junior Demographer Travel Grant provides an opportunity for a young demographer to meet world renowned specialists in the field. The grant covers roundtrip transport to the meeting as well as accommodation during the meeting. In return the junior demographer may be asked by the seminar organizers to write up a summary of the meeting or help with other organizational tasks during the meeting.

Conditions of eligibility

Candidates are expected to be holders of an advanced degree in a discipline related to population and junior in the profession.

All applicants for the junior demographer award should be IUSSP members (nonmembers wishing to apply can apply for membership at the following link: http://www.iussp.org/Membership/4application.php).

Each candidate must be sponsored by two IUSSP members.

In the case of equal qualifications, preference will normally be given to a candidate from a developing country.

Application procedure

Candidates should submit a letter explaining why they are interested in attending the Seminar, what they expect to gain from it, and how they could contribute to it. The candidate’s letter, curriculum vitae, and letters of recommendation from two sponsors should be sent to the seminar organizers listed below.

Candidates interested in attending the IUSSP seminar on Longevity: Early-life Conditions, Social Mobility and Other Factors that Influence Survival to Old Age, to be held in Lund, Sweden, on 8-10 June 2006 should address their questions and application material to Tommy Bengtsson (Tommy.Bengstsson@ekh.lu.se) with a copy (cc) to Madeleine Jarl (Madeleine.Jarl@ekh.lu.se). The application deadline for this seminar is 28 February 2006.

RTN WORKSHOP ON MORTALITY TRENDS, LONGEVITY AND POPULATION AGEING

RTN WORKSHOP ON MORTALITY TRENDS, LONGEVITY AND POPULATION AGEING
European University Institute
Fiesole (Florence), January 13th-14th, 2006

UNIVERSITÀ DEGLI STUDI DI ROMA "LA SAPIENZA"
DIPARTIMENTO DI SCIENZE DEMOGRAFICHE
________________________________________________________________________________
This two-day panel workshop is organized by Dipartimento di Scienze Demografiche of the
University of Rome “La Sapienza” at the European University Institute in Fiesole (Florence)-Italy,
on January 13th-14th, 2006. This meeting is supported by the Research Training Network (RTN)
“Demographic Sustainability and European Integration”, under the auspices of the Fifth Framework
Programme of the European Commission.
Scientific Background:
Studies on trends in elderly mortality and increased longevity are among the most important, also in
light of the impact on population ageing and social security and welfare schemes throughout
Europe. These demographic changes and uncertainties raise important questions about the potential
of human longevity and our collective future. In particular, the unexpected increase in longevity
gives more room to a potential increase in mortality differentials between males and females as well
as between populations. Moreover, as regards the study of elderly mortality and morbidity, an
interesting aspect is, among others, the existence of wide ranging inter-group differences.
Differences in health and mortality between both sexes are well-known, particularly in view of their
implications on demographic imbalances among the elderly and their effect on health systems and
pension schemes. Furthermore, plenty of the controversy about the life expectancy limits and
methods for studying elderly mortality continues among demographers.
The RTN team on “Mortality and survival” focused on all these aspects. In particular, it has been
developed research on: the major conceptual framework in the study of human longevity
concerning bio-social theories of ageing and senescence with very timely implications for health
care policies, pension systems and other population forecasts; the empirical advance for mortality
research; international comparison of mortality databases; the methodological improvement in the
study of survival patterns; socio-economic differentials in mortality; geographic differences in adult
and ageing mortality; integrated studies of foetal, infant, and maternal mortality and subnational
populations; mathematical modeling. In particular, the research unit of Rome “La Sapienza” added
a complementary research focus on methods of evaluating biological, social and economic
determinants of mortality and life expectancy, including both longitudinal trends and inter-countries
differences.
Thus, the aim of the workshop is to put into evidence the major results of the research developed by
the RTN team, in particular as regards mortality, longevity and population ageing.
The event:
This workshop brings together senior and young researchers (i.e. pre, post-doc and young
researchers under RTN) studying different aspects of mortality, longevity and population ageing
and favours the exchange of the latest scientific knowledge and approaches on these topics.
Moreover, the workshop aims at promoting networking between young researchers. The workshop
